Lana Del Rey has become super popular recently. I do not personally listen to her too much, but I do know a ton of people who are in love with her. A lot of the people I know who like her could be considered “hipster” so I guess I am just not cool enough to enjoy her music. I believe she has only released two albums Born to Die and Paradise. Both of which were very successful on the charts. She has a very soulful sound, and her voice is very rich. She has gained lots of attention, and she has worked hard for it. Her songs are slow, and definitely not “light pop.” Her sound is reminiscent of the 60’s, and her music is great for use in TV or music. She sounds real, and her lyrics are serious. I think it’s great that she is becoming so well-known because it shows how diverse popular music can be.
Remember when Taylor Swift was a country singer? Well, I think times have changed. She is a pop artists now, and she isn’t a teenager anymore. She is “America’s sweetheart” or at least she used to be. She writes her own songs, and I think that’s really great. We should appreciate when artists contribute more than just their vocals to their music; it proves how passionate and dedicated they are to their work. All her songs are extremely catchy, but every single one is a love song! She says she draws inspiration from her real life, and she has a lot of relationships to use. She is well-known for dating many other famous guys, like Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Harry Styles, Joe Jonas.. There are quite a few. We have caught on to this, and she has been receiving a lot of feedback on her personal life lately because of it. Regardless, I think she is a fantastic person, and her career is still going strong.
Ok, so I know Chris Brown is not the best person, but that has nothing to do with his talent. He is a singer, dancer, and rapper. He has been doing his thing since 2005; that was when he released “Run It!” which was an immediate hit. There are so many songs by him that have the potential to become R&B classics, like “Take You Down,” “Forever,” and “Deuces.” He gained a lot of negative attention after beating his girlfriend, Rihanna, back in 2009. Yes, that was a terrible thing to do, but I still like his music. It’s actually surprising how the incident did not hurt his career too much. His newest album is Fortune, and I think it is really great, and I listen to it all the time now. F.A.M.E. and Chris Brown are other albums I like. His music sounds very similar to Usher. Chris Brown is my favorite artist of the moment; I just hope he doesn’t make another huge mistake.
I love Drake Aubrey Graham! You probably know him just as Drake, and he is extremely popular. He is a Canadian rapper, and he really got me into rap music. I remember the first song I heard by him was “Forever” on the radio. Some of my favorite rap songs are by him, like “Fancy” and “Best I Ever Had.” A lot of people complain about how he is not “real” rap, but I still like his music. He is part of the rap group YMCMB (Young Money Cash Money Billionaire), which was started by Lil’ Wayne. He was actually on Degrassi when he was younger, before his rap career started. Take Care, his newest album, is probably his best in my opinion. His raps aren’t always the fastest; unlike some other rappers, his raps can be slow, but he will still sound great. Off of the Take Care album, I really like “The Motto” and “HYFR,” but you have probably already heard those on the radio thousands of times.
So this weeks post is for my friend Tracie because her birthday was over the weekend. I’m really into YouTube, and I got her to start liking this singer on YouTube names Joseph Vincent (hoorahjencar on YouTube). I think he is just great! He is so talented, and as a fan, I am proud of where he is going. He is signed with Catch Adventures. He has been writing his own music since he was still in high school, and now he has his own album out! His voice is smooth and calming. His album reminds me of Bruno Mars. I like album, Blue Skies, but I listen to his covers on YouTube more. My favorite song by him is “S.A.D. (Single Awareness Day).”
I know this post is about Joseph Vincent, but there are many YouTube musicians I enjoy listening to. Others to check out include: Tori Kelly, AJ Rafael, JR Aquino, Andrew Garcia, Jeremy Passion, Traphik, Jayesslee, and more. I love that they have gained popularity from just being part of the YouTube community because they are independent. They have more freedom in their career because they started it on their own. Also, I think their fans are more loyal to them. Being able to watch your idol’s career grow actually makes you proud, and you get to say you heard of them years ago. They are also able to support each other. Many YouTube artists are friends so they can collaborate and gain even more popularity from other fan bases easily. I love YouTube!
So instead of discussing an actual artist this week, I want to talk about different music websites. I constantly have music playing when I’m home, but I never buy music. I think iTunes is the best program to download music. My phone actually uses Google Play, but I don’t like using it. I prefer listening to music online. I used to go on Pandora and listen to their internet radio, but the songs on my favorite stations became to repetitive for me. I started using Spotify a few months ago, and it’s awesome. I believe for the first 6 months you use it you get unlimited free music with some ads, but after that you have a limit to your listening time. I haven’t had mine for 6 months so I still have full use of it. You can make playlist, start a radio station base don a song or artist, and listen to complete albums. It recently changed so now you can even follow people. When you follow someone, you can see what songs he/she is listening to and when they create new playlists. IHeartRadio is another website. I usually go on there to listen to actual radio stations.
Justin Timberlake came out with a new album this week! It’s called The 20/20 Experience. It has 10 songs and my favorite is “Pusher Love Girl.” All the songs have a similar sound, and each is actually pretty long. (The shortest song is almost 5 minutes long.) I have been waiting for his album ever since Timberlake performed “Suit and Tie” and “Pusher Love Girl” at the Grammy’s this year.I was surprised when I first heard “Suit and Tie,” but I’ve grown to love that song. I was ecstatic when he confirmed that The 20/20 Experience is only half an album and the other half will be released at a later date. The last album he came out with was seven years ago, yet he is still extremely popular. Justin Timberlake is just great. He’s a triple threat! It may have been easy for him to start a solo career after being a member of the 90’s boy band N*SYNC. Fans who have followed him since the beginning of his career must be incredibly proud of him.
So in case you didn’t get it, the title is a reference to Ne-Yo’s song “Miss Independent.” Ne-Yo has always been one of my favorite musical artists. R&B is actually my favorite type of music, and Ne-Yo has the perfect voice for it. His voice is smooth and calming. I like to listen to his songs before going to sleep. He has worked with the biggest artists. He started out as a song-writer and has written many hits including “Irreplaceable” (Beyoncé), “Take a Bow” (Rihanna), and “Let Me Love You” (Mario). And he has his own hit songs. So he sings, song-writes, and dances! He came out with a new album, R.E.D. recently, and I really love it! I like that he put out the single “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)” just because it has the same name as the hit song he wrote for Mario, but that song isn’t my favorite off the album. I actually made a Ne-Yo playlist and I figured I should just list all the songs I put on it. “So Sick” and “Miss Independent” have to be my favorites.
-Because Of You -Can We Chill -Make It Work -Go On Girl -So Sick -When You’re Mad -Sexy Love -Never Knew I Needed -Cracks In Mr. Perfect -Lazy Love -Miss Right -Don’t Make Em Like You -She Is -My Other Gun -Single -Mad -Miss Independent -Part Of The List -Lie To Me -She Got Her Own
Super Bowl XLVII was last week, and Beyoncé was the halftime performance (but you knew that). She was stunning! The week before everyone was buzzing about how she lip-synced the national anthem at Obama’s inauguration, but after her Superbowl performance, who still doubts her? Her voice is versatile and genuine. She is a superstar of our generation, and her hits definitely live on. My cousin said “Single Ladies” might be one of the defining songs of our time, and although we’ll have to wait and see, I agree with him. Her Destiny’s Child days were jumpin’, and she is irreplaceable. Everyone says her name because she is a survivor of the 90’s. She just had a baby, but look at her! She’s still bootylicious. Jay-Z is lucky because being married to Beyoncé means you got no problems. Ok, I’m done with that now, but really…what am I supposed to say about BEY? We live in a democracy, but she’s still a queen. The visual effects during her show were amazing, and all the single ladies went crazy when Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams got up on stage too. She runs the world. Sorry… I just can’t resist. Even spellcheck recognizes her name (it corrected the accent on the e)!
